Dr. James Higgins completed his undergraduate and medical school training at Queen’s University, before returning home to Toronto to pursue an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency in 2014. He graduated in 2018 and was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He completed the University of Toronto Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2019, followed by a Fellowship in Trauma and Adult Lower Extremity Reconstruction at the University of Toronto in 2020.

His clinical areas of focus include hip and knee arthroplasty, trauma, as well as surgical management of both lower and upper extremity sports injuries and degenerative conditions.

His primary research interest has been quality improvement and innovation through eHealth strategies such as mobile apps and artificial intelligence. These virtual healthcare strategies can be incorporated into a patient’s care plan to encourage active involvement, minimize anxiety about the recovery experience, and improve overall satisfaction.

In July 2020 he will be joining the Michael Garron Hospital as a staff orthopaedic surgeon, continuing a tradition of innovative, state-of-the-art, and patient-centric care at this institution for a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the community.
